To Cause A Death tells the story of my 33 year odyssey to find the answer to the question, ‘Do I have the right to live now that I have caused a death?’ My purpose in writing it is to use my experience as a catalyst for opening up discussion about the long-term consequence of causing a death.
Since my crash in 1971, 17,000 pedestrians have died on Australian roads; 53,000 pedestrians have died on British roads; and 178,000 pedestrians have died on American roads. The suffering of the bereaved is something we can all empathise with; yet few people can imagine the effect on the 248,000 drivers and their families. This is not surprising given that precious little research is being undertaken on the subject of causing accidental death.
I kept silent about my story for over 25 years, which it seems, is not uncommon. However, since speaking openly I’ve come to realise the importance of ‘owning one’s truth’. I hope that my truth, my story, will also encourage other stories to be told.
Every year thousands of people are killed in accidents that occur on the roads, in the workplace, and at home. If you have been involved in an accidental death, please consider telling your story.
